BEFORE I KNEW

from DEMOS by Rick Berlin

about

I so loved Berlin Babylon. The dancing, the astonishing knockout beautiful lead actor, the bizarre & oftentimes terrifying storyline and of course Bryan Ferry’s sound track. But what I most remember was what the gay dude said at a party about a song he was about to sing: ‘I wrote this song before I knew who it was for.’ which has been stuck in my head until today when it became perhaps one of The Weirdest songs I’ve written. But when I listened to it on my audio enhancing phone last night, stoned on 10 mg Indica gummies, I was ok with it. There’s a ghost coda (my first ‘hit’) - quoted from the Berlin Airlift record. (I couldn’t help myself.)

lyrics

BEFORE I KNEW

is it a trick
is it magic
is it a musical thing
dormant
in the heart

i wrote this song
years ago
before i knew
who
it was for

turn around

i was just
coming’ into
yr shop
get an ice cream
cup o coffee
n there you were
eyes on fire
i lost my mind
n there you were

i wrote this song
years ago
like a river
filled w moonlight
i’m drivin’ a red cab
i’m on the clock
i see you
i hear you
i hold yr hand

turn around

i was just
coming’ into
yr shop
get an ice cream
cup o coffee
n there you were
eyes on fire
i lost my mind
n there you were

is it a trick
is it magic
is it a musical thing
dormant
in the heart
oh i love you
that was the chorus
over the hill
that was the song

turn around
crazy

i was just
coming’ into
yr shop
get an ice cream
cup o coffee
n there you were
eyes on fire
i lost my mind
n there you were

is it a trick
is it magic
is it a musical thing
dormant
in the heart
oh i love you
that was the chorus
over the hill
that was the song…

He continues to make music w/ intelligence + integrity, building an international reputation around his knotty, singular piano playing, straight-from-the-heart singing and a style of character-based songwriting that's drawn comparisons to Waits + Cohen ... more
