SMELL THE LOVE

about

We on the JPMFestival Committee know this, but few outside our circle realize how huge a contribution Justin McCarthy makes to this event.

Justin is the guy who came up with The Albino Squirrel as our ubiquitous logo/mascot, who designs our graphics, and who has named two of our musical fundraisers, both at The Midway. Coming right up this Saturday: SMELL THE LOVE. Way back, when chasing a battle of the local bar bands, it was Justin who named it BAR WARS, which, appropriately, became JOHN CASEY’S BAR WARS (after we lost John).

Justin designed the double fists for BW and the clothespin on the nose for SMELL.

I’m predictably horrible at learning cover songs, so I’m playing my own at SMELL. Yesterday I took a crack at the SMELL theme. It ain’t much, and I’ll give it a shot on Saturday. But here ya go - voice and piano direct to iPhone. You can hear fingers on keys.

CHANGED IT UP by replacing my iPhone at home recording with the one time shot with Ricky McLean playing guitar with the song as we were setting up for rehearsal with Nickel & Dime cuz I like it so much.

lyrics

SMELL THE LOVE

can ya smell it
i betcha can
can ya smell it
i betcha can
smell the love
it's everywhere
smell the love
it's everywhere

something dirty
something clean
something rank
something in between

can ya smell it
i betcha can
can ya smell it
i betcha can
smell the love
it's everywhere
smell the love
it's everywhere

something sweet
something bad
something real
that ya never had

A giant on the Boston music scene. His colorful songwriting + strong stage presence have influenced countless other artists since the early 1970s. He continues to make music w/ intelligence + integrity, building an international reputation around his knotty, singular piano playing, straight-from-the-heart singing and a style of character-based songwriting that's drawn comparisons to Waits + Cohen ... more
