THE BRIDGE

from DEMOS by Rick Berlin

/

about

When Ricky McLean and I drive up to Lowell to rehearse with Matt Bailin and Savannah Marshall (saving them a trip to the hood and getting outa town a bit ourselves) we love, in particular, the bridge we cross on the way to their house. It’s all lit up and glorious to coast across. We mention this to Matt and he tells us about the time he was clocked in the jaw, a sucker punch, outa the blue, as he was ambling across that same bridge. Was a shock to hear because of our easy affection for that hunk of iron. Like a pretty girl with a pearl handled revolver in a winter muff, the cloak of beauty disguising an unexpected dark. That bridge will never mean the same thing to us again.

lyrics

THE BRIDGE

when yr walkin’
on the bridge
watch yr step
better watch yr step

there’s a river
colored lights
no one’s ‘round
no cars in sight
oh boy
the sky’s lit up
at sunset
n ya close yr eyes
n r thinkin’ about yr girl

watch yr step

ya don’t see him comin’
w a fist that’s ready t punch
n a sad dark look
in his eyes
ya don’t see him comin’
n ya wish ya did
but yr happy
n yr skippin’ along
the pretty bridge

watch yr step

feelin’ no pain
n yr smokin’ somethin’
good
been a fine day
all around
nothin’ t worry about
when outa nowhere
a fist t yr jaw
oh my god
what’s wrong
w this world?!

watch yr step

right above
Kerouac Park
beautiful bridge
gonna change you
will ya forgive
that bastard
you want to
but ya can’t
you will never
be the same
ya gonna walk
you gonna walk across the bridge
empty diner
down below
n ya better watch yr step
ya better watch it

watch yr step

He continues to make music w/ intelligence + integrity, building an international reputation around his knotty, singular piano playing, straight-from-the-heart singing and a style of character-based songwriting that's drawn comparisons to Waits + Cohen ... more
