WAS THAT YOU?

from DEMOS by Rick Berlin

/

about

At a Violent Femmes show the other night with Margie Nicoll, Shamus Moynihan, Alex Gang, Charlie McEnerney, Emily Sweeney and friends Margie noticed a certain smell. 'Was that you?' she asked. Unusually it was not, but now it's a song. Not about THAT, but about the idea that ultimately we never ever really truly 'know' anyone. Even ourselves. Which is, in it's own way, a good thing, right?

lyrics

WAS THAT YOU?

dancing in the corner
at a Violent Femmes show
like a sad clown
lost in space
yr blue eyes closed
oh oh Was That You?
oh was that really you?

walking out Sorella’s in a hurry
yelling on yr great big phone
tears like rivers of fire
spitting on the cobblestone
oh oh Was That You?
was that really you?

i just can’t tell
who you are to me
or to yourself
but that’s ok
ya keep the magic alive

looking at yourself
in the laundamat window
w a big fake smile
laughing at yourself
like a hipster Shakespear
monster on file
oh oh Was That You?
was that really you?

i just can’t tell
who you are to me
or to yourself
but that’s ok
ya keep the magic alive

solo

oh oh Was That You?
was that really you?
