about

Dear Kate is a song I wrote for the never completed musical, Moosup, that Peter Barrett and I worked on during the formation of Orchestra Luna. A spinster high school principle, Edith Overlook (named by Peter), worshipped Katherine Hepburn. This is her song. Liz Gallagher sang it. Bob Brandon played piano. I mailed Kate a copy. It came back. Her gate keeper didn't want me chasing her down with a lawsuit. Ah well. Both Peter and I dressed up AS Edith from time to time.

lyrics

DEAR KATE

you know there is a lady
i admire well
she’s gotta smile
big as the Grande Hotel
i’ve seen all her pictures
to me she’s a fixture
of a love so deep
in myself
i think i’d call her
Katherine
if i should ever happen
to me her
in person…

i would confidently
shake her hand
and tell her
quite forthrightly
like a man
that were it not for her kind
there’s never be a big time
example of the woman
i could be
i could be

oh miss Hepburn
how can we repay
the wisdom you’ve shown us all
applies today
i believed in you
and Spenser
and my mind could never
censor
the image of two people
in love
and tho
Dear Kate
i missed
it’s not that i resisted
my life i’m sure’s been
absolutely grand
and tho
Dear Kate
i missed
it’s not that i resisted
my life i’m sure’s been
absolutely grand
my life i’m sure’s been
absolutely…

i would confidently
shake your hand
and tell you
quite forthrightly
like a man
that were it not for your kind
there’s never be a big time
example of the woman
i could be
i could be

He continues to make music w/ intelligence + integrity, building an international reputation around his knotty, singular piano playing, straight-from-the-heart singing and a style of character-based songwriting that's drawn comparisons to Waits + Cohen ... more
