A few New Year’s Eve’s back some friends of ours house caught fire and all had to evacuate. It was freezing cold. No one was hurt, but all had to find new places to live. 6 units, 11 people in all. Shamus Moynihan set up a GoFundMe site and enough money was raised to give about $3,000 bucks to each occupant. In some ways this was an unexpected part of the displacement all are experiencing in Jamaica Plain and across the country. The fire moved friends out of the hood, but the ‘great big house’ that is family and friends sustained and got stronger. Most of my 20’s was spent in big houses with 10-20 people living under one roof. Much art, laughter and complicated relationships filled those wild rooms. On a larger scale, we are all part of the great big house that is Planet Earth. On a good day, under threat, we reach out to each other and in some simple way - belong.
