lyrics

GREEN ST

theres a house
in the middle of a street
hey ya jes might miss it if you weren’t lookin
but it ain’t tryin t be discrete
people go there
put up their feet
+ yr never sure who lives there
r which one is pete?
but you don’t care yr jus stoppin’ by
f beer

house on green st
s really something good
like a hippie but not really
like a beatnik youve misunderstood

they only listen t lps
got this peacock on the wall
drink wine out of a cereal box
standin 10 stories tall
+ ya wish it was yr place
but ya know that this can’t last
love that good’s forever lost as a thing
of the past

house on green st
s really something fine
like a house that ran away from home
a miner squintin’ up from the mine

stay up all night
on cheap alcohol
kid in the yard w/ a beat up guitar
tryin’ t write a song
one shoe off, one shoe on
dreamin of India, or maybe Ceylon
it’s the United State I like
cuz it ain’t like a country
at all

house on green st
s really something swell
like a 40s chain gang dustbowl tune
like a distant ringing bell

there’s feeling
that sneaks up on you
when you’re sure
when you’re sure
that you r not alone...anymore

from FORCED 2 SWALLOW, track released September 22, 2002
THE SHELLEY WINTERS PROJECT went into WOOLLY MAMMOTH SOUND (The weeping behemoth has folded her tent. The catacomb rehearsal/label/studio so many have slogged away in for years is being torn to bits to make room for - you guessed it - condERminiums.) Anyhow SWP slid in there one long night and recorded 17 songs live. (Sir David Minehan crawled all over the place - ass in air - to get things right.) Overdubbed vocals and one or two bits of guitar, violin. Mixed when we could. In many ways it's SHELLEY's truest record. No other instruments or players took part save those last remaining: Meredith Cooper - violin. Jeff Muzerolle - drums. Noah Scanlan - bass. David Berndt - guitar. Berlin - Berlin. Realize it's been said before, but as far as this old lady's concerned, SHELLEY is her LAST BAND EVER. Will miss Mr. Minehan with all my heart. Less some big idea with big bucks wades into my life.

He continues to make music w/ intelligence + integrity, building an international reputation around his knotty, singular piano playing, straight-from-the-heart singing and a style of character-based songwriting that's drawn comparisons to Waits + Cohen ... more
